We affirm that Jesus took upon himself the wrath of God for our sins and was punished on our behalf so that we might be made right in the eyes of our Heavenly Father. If you are familiar with Repent & Wonder you will know that the wrath of God is not something we have shied away from, our first published piece being a Historical, biblical, and philosophical breakdown of the doctrine of Penal Substitutionary Atonement. The primary pushback comes from a line that reads… “Till on that cross, as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied”. This world-famous hymn was written in 2001 and has been the center of much debate in the church. So how, in the face of death and suffering, might one sing the words with confidence “No guilt in life. How could there be no fear in death? Yet, as I sat there, my head pressed against the hardwood of the pew ahead of mine, the words of worship fell from my tongue as though the truth was demanding to be spoken. The love that started with his bride that was now confined to a hospital bed. As I looked at my grandfather I saw within him the love that God cultivated and manifested into a family. Silence fell among a group usually marked with loud conversation. As I sat in the chapel of a hospital I could feel within my mind the presence of death swirling once more around my family.
